Arafmi has been praised by Disability Reform Minister, Jenny Macklin, and federal member for Perth and Defence Minister, Stephen Smith. The two federal Ministers called at Arafmi’s Perth head office this week to announce 1 of 3 federal grants. Arafmi will provide carer services for the Midwest/Gascoyne, Personal Helpers and Mentors (PHaMs) services for Cockburn and expanded carer services in Wanneroo, Joondalup and Swan. Ms Macklin said Arafmi would provide more counsellors, more people working with young people and more opportunities for respite. “We know how important it is for carers to have respite”, the minister said that after talking to young carers on Arafmi’s school holiday program. She saw how the children had respect for Arafmi staff and how well staff interacted with the children. “Congratulations to Arafmi,” she said. Minister Smith said, “Governments can do a lot but the community depends on family members and Non Govt Organisations like Arafmi for their invaluable support.” Arafmi Board members, staff and carers interacted with the ministers at a morning tea. Arafmi Executive Director, Mike Seward, said the funding would greatly assist carers/families to maintain their important caring roles. See also http://jennymacklin.fahcsia.gov.au/node/2313
